Afloat Privacy Policy
Last updated September 15, 2026
- Your financial data — balances, bills, income, spending, check-ins — is stored only on your phone. It never leaves your phone unless you send it somewhere yourself, by saving a backup.
- There are no accounts, no ads, no analytics, and no tracking.
- We never sell or share your information, and we never will.
- Afloat does make two kinds of network request, described below: checking for app updates, and fetching an exchange rate when you ask for one. Neither carries any of your financial data.
Who we are
Afloat is a cash-flow forecasting app for Android, made by Afloat (“we”, “us”). This policy explains what the app does with information. If you have a question about it, email support@getafloat.app.
What stays on your phone
Everything you enter into Afloat is stored in a database on your phone: your account balance and check-ins, your bills, income and other planned items, the spending you log, your waterline, and your settings. We have no server that receives it, and we cannot see it.
Because it exists only on your phone, deleting it is in your hands: use Settings → Start over to erase everything, or uninstall the app. We have no copy to delete, so there is nothing to request from us.
What the app sends, and why
| Request | When | What it carries |
|---|---|---|
| App updates, to Expo (expo.dev), the service that delivers them | When the app opens | The app's version and update channel, the platform (Android), and a random identifier created when the app was installed, which is not linked to you, your Google account or your device's advertising ID. No financial data. |
| Exchange rates, to Frankfurter (frankfurter.dev), a free service publishing the European Central Bank's reference rates | Only when you view your forecast in another currency or convert the app's currency | The two currency codes (for example USD and CAD) and the time of the request. Never an amount, a balance or anything else you have entered. |
As with any internet request, the services that receive these can see your IP address. They use it to deliver what was asked for and handle it under their own privacy policies: Expo and Frankfurter.
Backups
A backup is a file containing all of your Afloat data, created on your phone when you tap Settings → Save a backup. Afloat hands it to Android's share menu, and it goes only where you choose to send it — a cloud drive, an email, another app. That service's privacy policy then applies to the copy you sent. The file is not encrypted, so anyone who has it can read it: keep it somewhere private. Restoring reads only the file you pick.
App lock
If you turn on app lock, Afloat asks Android to confirm it is you, using your fingerprint, face or screen lock. Android handles that check. Afloat never receives your fingerprint, face data or PIN — only whether the check succeeded.
Notifications
Reminders and warnings are created and scheduled on your phone. There is no notification server, and nothing is sent to deliver them.
Crash reports
We do not include any crash-reporting or analytics software. If you have allowed Android to share usage and diagnostics data with Google, Google may send us anonymous crash and performance reports through the Google Play Console — for example, which Android version a crash happened on. They contain no data you entered into Afloat. You control this in your phone's Google settings.
Permissions
- Notifications — to show the reminders you turn on.
- Run at startup — so scheduled reminders survive your phone restarting.
- Biometrics — for app lock, only if you turn it on.
- Internet and network state — for the two requests above.
Afloat does not ask for access to your files, photos, contacts or location. Saving and restoring a backup go through Android's own share menu and file picker, which need no permission.
What we never do
- We never sell, rent or share your information with anyone.
- We never show ads, and we never earn money from recommending financial products. We are paid by our users, never about them.
- We never ask you to create an account or connect your bank.
Children
Afloat is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect information from them — or from anyone.
Your rights
Depending on where you live, laws such as the California Consumer Privacy Act or the GDPR give you rights to access, correct or delete personal information a company holds about you. Because your Afloat data is held only on your phone, you can already see, change and delete all of it in the app. We do not sell or share personal information as those laws define it.
Changes to this policy
If Afloat ever starts sending anything new — for example, if we add optional paid features through Google Play, or an optional sync service — we will update this page before that version of the app is released, and change the date at the top.
